Match report: Inter Milan defeats rival AC Milan 2-1 in the derby to win the Serie A title; Fikayo Tomori’s late strike proves futile as Inter wins the title with five games remaining thanks to goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram. After defeating rival AC Milan 2-1, Inter Milan won Serie A for the twentieth time.
Inter’s insurmountable 17-point lead over their second-place city rivals, who scored a late goal through former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori, was cemented with five games remaining thanks to goals from Francesco Acerbi and Marcus Thuram. Tensions at the San Siro escalated before Inter’s title victory was officially declared. Three red cards were given during stoppage time, with Denzel Dumfries being sent off for Inter and Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria being sent off for AC Milan.
However, Inzagi’s first league title as Inter’s head coach could not be undone by the late annoyance. Acerbi’s goal gave Inter the lead in the eighteenth minute, and Thuram’s low shot four minutes later doubled the margin. Tomori’s rebound in the 80th minute gave Milan a late start to their comeback, but they were unable to find an equalizer to stall their rivals’ celebration.
Tensions erupted during stoppage time, leading to a brawl amongst the players that saw Dumfries and Hernandez receive red cards. A few minutes later, Calabria was also sent packing for violent behavior as he struck out with his arm, bringing Milan down to nine players.
