This week, Kaizer Chiefs have been winning in the DStv Premiership. On Saturday night, Amakhosi defeated SuperSport United 2-1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium thanks to a late goal from Mduduzi Shabalala. SuperSport lost for the second straight week, while the Glamour Boys’ five-match losing streak was snapped in the 76th minute by a goal from Shabalala.
In the first ten minutes of the match, Kaizer Chiefs had the majority of the ball, but the Tshwane team defended them fiercely. SSU had a difficult time getting into the game early on, much to the annoyance of coach Gavin Hunt. In the nineteenth minute of play, Christian Saile scored a goal to give Amakhosi the lead. The Congolese forward broke quickly into the SSU area, latching onto a deflected pass inside the box before firing the ball into the back of the net.
Before the half-hour mark, SuperSport had a few scoring opportunities, but they were unable to take advantage of them. Amakhosi relentlessly pursued a second goal while still seeing the most of the possession. Given Msimango’s header from close range went over the goal line in the 45th minute, giving the Glamour Boys the impression that they had doubled their lead after his initial attempt had struck the crossbar. But Msimango was called for an offside position, so the goal was disallowed.
Three minutes into the second half, Bradley Grobler’s attempt from the edge of the six-yard box went just wide of the crossbar, giving SuperSport a chance to tie the score. But shortly after Grobler’s effort, the referee quickly saw an infraction within the box and gave SSU a penalty. Terrence Dzvukamanja smoothly sighted the ball into the back of the net as he stepped up to the spot, giving his team a much-needed equalizer. SuperSport was unable to advance the ball over the halfway point, while Chiefs appeared to be playing with energy as the hourly mark drew near. Hunt’s side frequently chose the direct way, which at the time produced little results, in an effort to enter the game.
In the 76th minute of the match, Mduduzi Shabalala put his name to the scoresheet, demonstrating that the Glamour Boys’ pressure had paid off. After executing another quick attack within the SSU box, Saile found Shabalala on the perimeter, who sent a shot to the goalkeeper’s right. At the end of the game, SuperSport did not provide much of an offensive danger, therefore Chiefs managed to hold onto their lead and win the most points possible at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
